Student Experience:
Los Angeles Film Studies Center

After years of planning this trip out, it has finally arrived! I am so blessed that the Lord has provided me the opportunity to study at the Los Angeles Film Studies Center while being able to intern inside Hollywood, meeting remarkable people, and learning about all of the nooks and crannies to the film industry.

My trip started off with a weeklong road trip 2,400 miles across the country. Once arriving in L.A, my parents and I made a trip up to the Griffith Observatory to tour around and see the city of Los Angeles from an incredibly peaceful view, not to mention I was able to get a great view of the Hollywood sign! I moved in with four other people into a two-bedroom apartment, which has been quite the adjustment compared to living at school. It has been very entertaining though. I always have someone around to do something with.

Jami Humphries, junior Film Studies minor, in Los Angeles

The first week, about 50 students and I went to a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown upon the recommendation of one of our professors. It was beyond delicious. After ordering mountains of rice, chicken, and noodles, stuffing our faces with Chinese delight, our professor informed us that a celebrity heard we were eating there (he had left moments prior to our arrival) and prepaid for our meal. All 50 of us. Needless to say, that made our night. We proceeded from there to see an independent film directed by an LAFSC alumnus. This was one of the first independent films I have seen in theaters, so that was a great experience.

A couple of days later we were taken on a tour of the Dolby Theater, formerly known as the Kodak Theater. This is where is the Oscars are held, as well as performances such as the Cirque Du Soleil. The same day, I was able to walk down Hollywood Blvd and look at the stars and handprints along the street and in front of the Chinese Theater.

With actor Doug Jones

Other incredible experiences have included speaking with Doug Jones from Fantastic 4 Rise of the Silver Surfer, Pan’s Labyrinth, Hocus Pocus, and so many others! It was neat and inspiring to hear how he is using his heart for the Lord in the world of Hollywood. I’ve made an appearance at my very first movie premiere, waiting for hours pinned against a gate with other fans as I anticipated the arrival of some of my favorite actors. I have been able to go to several movies and movie theaters, some of which included Les Miserables at the ArcLight Theater and opening night of Identity Thief at a Pacific’s The Grove Theater.

I am interning at a voiceover talent agency that works with production companies such as DreamWorks Animation and Pixar and holds auditions for films, commercials, video games, you name it! Several of their clientele are A-list actors, so many you have heard of! Some of which I have already had the opportunity to talk to. I’ve been doing a lot of office work as well as listening to demos, providing sides for actors coming in, and working with celebrity packets. And it’s only the first few weeks! I’m excited to see where the Lord is going to take my adventures and how I am going to grow in Him this semester.
